What is the difference between FUT and FUE hair transplant?

Both FUT and FUE hair transplants offer patients the opportunity to achieve natural, long-lasting hair growth. The most notable difference between the two treatments lies in the hair extraction method.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is often referred to as the “traditional” hair restoration method or the “strip” method. This is because FUT involves the surgical excision of a piece of skin from the back of the scalp. The surgeon then closes the incision with sutures and extracts individual follicles from the excised strip. Patients who undergo FUT hair transplant will be left with a fairly lengthy, horizontal scar, which is often visible for those who prefer to wear their hair short. However, FUT does allow for a greater number of follicles to be extracted and transplanted in a single session when compared with FUE.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a newer and somewhat more advanced hair restoration technique. During FUE hair transplant, the surgeon uses a handpiece to extract individual hair follicles directly from the patient’s scalp. Because there is no scalpel incision and no sutures required, patients are left with virtually no visible evidence of hair restoration, making this an attractive option for men and women hoping to keep their work discreet.

In both FUE and FUT hair restoration procedures, Dr. Hashmi meticulously transplants the extracted follicles into the areas of hair loss in groups of 1, 2, 3, or 4. By placing the various groupings strategically, Dr. Hashmi is able to re-create a natural distribution. For example, individual follicles are placed near the hairline, while larger groupings are reserved for areas of denser hair growth.

With fairly identical success rates, the choice between FUT and FUE hair restoration is, ultimately, up to the patient. However, Dr. Hashmi and the knowledgeable hair restoration team at Nirvana Med Spa will thoroughly evaluate and discuss your concerns to help determine which treatment method may be most appropriate for you.

How long is FUT hair transplant recovery?

FUT hair transplant recovery may be slightly longer and more involved than the FUE hair transplant recovery process due to the incision and sutures that are required. After FUT hair transplant, patients may elect to take 1 – 2 weeks off work. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided, and patients should refrain from wearing hats or putting direct pressure on the incision and newly transplanted hairs.

About 2 – 4 weeks after either FUT or FUE hair restoration in Little Rock, AR, the newly transplanted hair follicles will begin to fall out. Though it can certainly be alarming, rest assured that this is a normal and necessary part of the hair transplant process. New hair growth will begin to appear over the next several weeks and months, with the final results taking about 6 – 12 months to develop.

Does transplanted hair last forever?

When performed by a highly qualified and experienced physician and properly cared for in the postoperative period, the results of a hair transplant can last indefinitely. Keep in mind that the transplanted hairs are taken from an area that was not subject to the original hair loss factors, so they often continue to grow and thrive throughout the rest of the patient’s lifetime. If patients do begin to notice additional thinning in other areas, a second or subsequent hair transplant can be undertaken to once again restore a more youthful look.
